70 miles…No Big Deal – Day 1

Today, our journey across America began.

We decided that to start the day by dipping our wheels in the Atlantic. Bad idea. We ended up with wet shoes and super sandy bikes. But you make some good decisions and you make some bad ones.

The planned route for today was to travel from Nags Head to Fairfield. We had found a few short cuts on google maps that we were going to take to cut some distance. However when we got to the road to turn off it was a gated gravel road. Not passable. So we kept on pedaling down Hwy 264.

The unfortunate thing about today was that for the first 30 miles we were not able to find any shade worth taking a break in. Once we found a perfect enticing spot we were attacked by a swarm of mosquitos that seemed to never leave us. This wasn’t just a few mosquitos. It was if we had stepped on a bees nest or sat in an ant hill. Ridiculous.

The second troubling thing of the day was Hwy 64 goes through a state forest which currently is experiencing wildfires. So riding through the lingering smoke while already gasping for air was not the greatest. But we endured.

Since the route changed the day ended up being much longer than anticipated. Instead of 56 miles, we traveled 70 miles.

We have finally reached our quaint campsite for the evening and are enjoying getting to stretch out. Amy is going to make some pasta for dinner. She made some incredible sandwiches for lunch.

For tomorrow we have realized that we must begin riding earlier to avoid the blistering heat that only gets worse as the day goes on. Plan is to be riding by 6am.

    Hi Karey and Team,
I just had to tell you what my little perpetual devotional calendar at my desk said for TODAY, May 31.

    GO THE EXTRA MILE
Go the extra mile and not only refuse to complain but also choose to be thankful in the midst of your circumstances.

Through Him, therefore, let us constantly and at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name. Hebrews 13:15 AMP

I am praying for you all!!
